stillness

Yesterday was the most glorious, snowstormy, winter day.

whiteout, overlooking the Charles River to Boston

The universities were shut down for the blizzard, and I spent the morning out in the cold beauty, blissfully walking for hours down the center of silent, snow-blanket streets, hurdling over snowbanks in my big Sorel boots.

And when I came home, I nestled into the wingbacked chair by the woodstove and worked solidly on finishing my Vermont Shawl pattern. It's done now, at long last. I feel such peace and stillness. One small change to make when I get home tonight, and then it'll be up on Ravelry ....

Now, I usually have a contest to randomly give away copies of a fresh pattern. But this time, I'm going to reward the readers who have been with me on this long journey. I'm going to send a copy of the pattern to everyone (that I can readily track down, at least) who left me a blog comment about these shawls over the past two years. If you know you've commented, and you don't get an email from me by tomorrow, drop me a line! (evergreenknits@gmail.com)

  2. What a lovely idea. Your writing was so descriptive today. I could just see mysef hiking along in the snow with you, then sighing by the fire when you cast off that last stitch. Beautiful!

  3. I know, wasn't the snow great?! Except ours was a little bit gusty and pelted in my face, but still it was nice. Glad to see the shawl done, again. But the real question is, how are your Sorel boots? I'm in search mode and gathering opinions :). My Columbias split and now I'm stuck with a foot of snow and no boots!!

  4. I know exactly that 'snow stillness' that snow can bring, it is a strange sort of calm. But then to come inside to the contrast of the warmth and the fire - and to craft - wonderful!

  5. We got about an inch here yesterday (south shore of NS), and it was slushy. We were supposed to get 6-8". It's pretty much gone today, it was a couple of degrees above freezing. So far we haven't gotten more than about 2" at once, and it's usually gone the next day or two. I've wanted snowshoes for years, but at this rate I wouldn't get any use of them! (The kids did get their first snow day today cuz the back roads were too icy.)

  6. that is so sweet of you! I will have to knit 3 of these for sure, one for my mom, one for my aunt and one for myself, all native vermont-born farm girls! We are planning to get together this summer in arizona at my aunts, first time we would all be together in almost 20 years. Thanks Hannah!

*wink, just saw you put it up on Rav!

  10. You are so sweet and generous to give this pattern away! But I must say, I was so happy to pay for it, it is a beaut! Besides, I think I owe you because I made at least 10 of your storm cloud shawls!
    Blessings,
    Lisa G (lisagreenb on Rav)

  11. A bit different than the desert, eh?
I can usually tell when we've had overnight snow without looking out the window - every sound has a muffled quality that only fresh snow can cause.
Thank you so much for the pattern! I'm trying to decide if I should wait to cast on until I've finished one of my shawls-already-in-progress, so I can start this one with a clear conscience, or just tell my conscience to hush and cast on anyway...

  13. I just happened upon your blog a few weeks ago, but tracked your posts back to when you began and I am seriously impressed by your designs!! It must have been wonderful living in the desert, it's obvious that it inspired you!! This shawl will definitely be a must get for me ... I've been keeping my eye out for it since I found your blog and I'm happy to see your VT shawl is now available!!
